Formations and Units from Kazakhstan during the Period of the Great Patriotic War – the battle for Rzhev (5 January 1942 – 21 March 1943)
Abstract
Introduction. The purpose of the article is to establish the role of military formations from the Kazakh SSR in the fighting for Rzhev in the period 1942–1943, which became part of the strategic defensive and offensive operations for Stalingrad of the Soviet Armed Forces in the second period of the Great Patriotic War.
Materials and Methods. Historical-comparative and historical-typological methods of research became the basis for solving the scientific problem of this work. Combat documents of units and formations formed in Kazakhstan during the period under study, stored in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, as well as the works of authors of the Soviet period, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation allowed to reconstruct the events of the period under study.
Results. Kazakh units: 39th Independent Rifle Brigade, reorganised in these battles into 88th Guards Rifle Division, 30th Guards Rifle Division, 100th National Rifle Brigade, 101st Independent Rifle Brigade, 173rd Howitzer Artillery Regiment of the Russian State Guards Committee, 8th Guards Rifle Panfilov Division and Moscow 26th Independent Cadet Rifle Brigade participating in offensive operations as part of the troops of the 3rd, 4, Strike Armies, 20, 39, 61, 22nd Armies contributed to the destruction of large German forces of the 9th Army of the Wehrmacht, 1 Panzer Division in the areas of cities, major district centres and railway stations of strategic importance for the USSR VGK Stavka: Velikie Luki, Velizh, Rudnya, Ostashkovo, Selizharovo, Toropets, Bolshoye Kropotovo, Podosinovka, Olenino, Bely, Pogoreloe Gorodishche, Kholm, and others. and their liberation from the enemy.
Discussion and Conclusion. The author concludes that the participation of military formations from the Kazakh SSR in the battle for Rzhev became a component of a significant contribution of the republic to the victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War.
