The Paradigm of Ecological Harmony of Orthodoxy in the Context of Modern Challenges

Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of the article is to conduct a theoretical analysis of the paradigm of ecological harmony of Orthodoxy in the context of modern challenges. To determine the general outline of the processes of state-religious interaction in the context of environmental problems and their prospects. To identify the most significant specific features of the paradigm of ecological harmony of Orthodoxy, to justify the need to turn to the study of the Orthodox strategy of ecological harmony.

Materials and Methods. The solution to research problems was provided by a complex of complementary theoretical (analysis of scientific literature on the problem under study, comparative analysis, comparison, generalization, systematization) and empirical (method of expert assessments) methods.

Results. A number of preliminary remarks are made, indicating the features of solving environmental problems in the light of the idea of the Orthodox paradigm of environmental harmony. Advantages (preservation of religious traditions) and negative (new forms of atheism, dualism, syncretism) trends in the development of secular and religious ecological culture are noted. Examples of responsible management (monasteries) and the experience of saints are identified as an example of a proper attitude towards nature. They can contribute to a change in the self-awareness of modern man in the context of the transformation of Russian society, and influence the possible damage caused by man to nature. It is concluded that the development of the Orthodox paradigm of ecological harmony in the context of globalization can be carried out quite successfully and in this regard requires serious research.

Discussion and Conclusion. The paradigm of ecological harmony of Orthodoxy as a model for solving problems related to ecology is theologically substantiated and tested in the Orthodox tradition in monastic life and in the form of the experience of saints. Its specificity lies in the fact that, based on the idea of salvation, it forms the “ecology of the inner world”, which determines the ecology of the environment. This is a universal with an Orthodox-archetypal semantic load that determines the social forms of thinking and behavior of a person towards nature and the world, in the direction of harmony with nature and the surrounding world. Promising directions in solving environmental problems are outlined.
