“New Ethics” in the Context of Anti-Ideas Concept by A. I. Titarenko
Abstract
Introduction. The analysis of the complex issues that make up the semantic core of the “new ethics” involves the study of various phenomena that often contradict each other. When they talk about the “new ethics”, they touch upon the freedom of choice problem and self-expression, the rigid determinism of human moral attitudes by some idea of what is proper, socially acceptable and approved. “New ethics” proponents speak about it as a new stage in the development of morality, which challenges traditionalism and totalitarianism. However, the categoricity of this challenge turns into a new totalitarianism, like a trickster, it changes the image of modern morality, creating shifters of good and evil, freedom and unfreedom, heroes and antiheroes.
Materials and Methods. The methodological basis for the analysis of “new ethics” problems are the concept of anti-ideas by A. I. Titarenko, E. Neumann’s concept of individualization of ethics through the rejection of collective and social interaction by T. Luсkmann. The “new ethics” as a desire to identify and resolve conflicts arising in the communicative space indicates the need to find normative foundations for new life practices.
Results. The “new ethics”, what is already reflected in the title, is based on opposition and collision, the desire to abandon traditional prohibitions and regulations, force those who disagree to admit their inconsistency, take responsibility for the actions and assessments of the past, correct mistakes made. The concept of anti-ideas allows us to look at the “new ethics” and the public outcry about it as a kind of game in which antiheroes, not heroes, act, and the desire to defend rights in practice becomes new forms of suppression and reverse discrimination. The formalized value of the Other, indicated in the requirement to observe political correctness, turns into a new totalitarianism, the requirement to adapt to the opinion of a minority. The boundaries of the ethical are fluid, the normative and the non-normative are difficult to distinguish, and the results are unpredictable.
Discussion and Conclusion. The claim of the new ethics to “novelty” is evidence that there is a need for a revision of moral norms and values in society, new ways of “fighting for recognition” of individuality, otherness, a kind of moral mediation between a personal position, an act and the moral validity of the demands of a changing society.
Keywords: “new ethics”, norms, ideas, anti-ideas, morality, normative perspectives, culture of abolition.
