Geography of Distribution of Illegal Literature of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in the Mordovian Counties of the Penza Province in 1900–1904
Abstract
Introduction. The article is devoted to the analysis of the territorial distribution of anti-government publications by the Socialist-Revolutionary Party on the territory of three counties of the Penza province in 1900–1904.
Materials and Methods. The research uses materials from central and regional archives. The study used a problem-chronological method and a micro-historical approach.
Results. The article indicates that initially the printed publications of the Social Revolutionaries penetrated into the Mordovian counties from outside the Penza province. The picture changes with the creation of provincial, and then local party groups. The distribution of illegal literature is becoming the main activity of local social revolutionaries. The peak of the spread of propaganda products occurred in 1903, which correlates with the all-Russian revolutionary upsurge. During the period under review, the discovery of more than 300 different titles of party literature was witnessed, but within short distances from the place of their production. The police also failed to detain any agitators, who are still being reported as unknown persons. With the defeat of local party organizations, the number of illegal literature began to decline and by 1904 it became minimal.
Discussion and Conclusion. The study showed that the leader in terms of the discovery of Socialist-Revolutionary literature was the Insar region of the province, on the territory of which the most active party group in terms of propaganda worked. However, the agitation of the population by local Social revolutionaries in the period under review was not direct, party representatives were engaged only in the unaddressed scattering of pamphlets and proclamations.
Keywords: socialist revolutionaries, pamphlets, proclamations, leaflets, printing house, police, peasants.
