Investigation of the Relationship between the Traits of the Dark and Light Personality Triads with Emotional Intelligence in Students

Abstract

Introduction. The relevance of the problem is due to the importance of studying the factors influencing the development of integrated personality characteristics, which include the constructs of the Dark (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) and Light (faith in humanity, humanism, Kantianism) personality triads. The purpose of the study was to identify the interrelationships of emotional intelligence, Dark and Light personality triads among students.

Materials and Methods. The following diagnostic tools were used: 1) A short questionnaire of the Dark Triad of D. Jones and D. Paulhus’s personality in the adaptation by M. S. Egorova, M. A. Sitnikova, O. V. Parshikov; 2) questionnaire of S. B. Kaufman’s Bright triad of personality with co-authors in the adaptation of D. S. Kornienko, V. K. Vyazovkina, A. N. Nevryueva; 3) questionnaire of N. Hall in the modification of G. V. Rezapkina. A total of 226 students of Cherepovets State University and Ivanovo State Medical University (30.97 % men, 69.03 % women) aged 18–24 years old (M = 18.99, SD = 1.26) took part in the study.

Results. Based on correlation analysis, it was found that Machiavellianism turned out to be unrelated to emotional intelligence, narcissism and traits of the Light Triad found a positive connection with it, and psychopathy – a negative one. As a result of multiple regression analysis of the influence of emotional intelligence on the features of the Dark and Light triads, it was revealed: the positive influence of self-awareness (awareness of one’s emotions) on narcissism, faith in humanity, humanism and Kantianism, and negative on psychopathy; the positive influence of empathy on humanism. As a result, of studying the reverse effect of the traits of the Dark and Light personality triads on emotional intelligence, it was found: the positive influence of narcissism on self-regulation, communication and self-motivation; the positive influence of humanism on empathy; the negative influence of Machiavellianism on communication and psychopathy on self-awareness.

Discussion and Conclusion. Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that emotional intelligence, traits of the Dark and Light personality triads are closely related to each other, and act as predictors for each other. The obtained results can be useful in working with students, in the process of building individual trajectories of self-development.
