Personal Characteristics of Students Influencing Gadget-dependent Behavior
Abstract
Introduction. The article examines the problem of the relationship between personal characteristics and gadget addiction of students. The established theoretical approaches to the concept of gadget addiction and the factors influencing it are analyzed.
Materials and Methods. The empirical study was carried out on the basis of the National Research Ogarev Mordovia State University, which included 102 students. The following methods were used: a test to determine addiction to gadgets - a modification of the Internet addiction test by K. Young (Internet Addiction Test, IAT); test questionnaire to determine the level of self-esteem of S. V. Kovalev; Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) by J. Tangney, methodology for studying the volitional organization of personality by M. S. Gutkina, G. F. Mikhalchenko, A. V. Prudilo. Mathematical processing of the obtained results was carried out using Pearson correlation analysis and the Mann – Whitney U test.
Results. As a result of the study, positive correlations were revealed between personal characteristics and the level of dependence on gadgets among students. Gadget dependence is positively associated with low self-esteem of respondents and has a strong negative relationship with self-control.
Discussion and Conclusion. Students with a high level of gadget addiction are characterized by a low level of self-control and cannot regulate their desire to use smartphones. Also, students with low levels of self-esteem are prone to gadget addiction, which may be explained by lack of self-confidence and a tendency to use smartphones to satisfy their affiliative and information needs.
Keywords: gadget addiction, self-esteem, self-control, students, addictive behavior.
