Orthodoxy in Understanding and Solving the Global Problems of Our Time

 

Abstract

Introduction. It has been noted that the defining trend in the development of the modern world is the globalization of all spheres of public life. Religious organizations are undoubtedly involved in this process. In this regard, the task is to consider the global issues that the church can contribute to the analysis and resolution of, such as social injustice, inequality in starting opportunities, a significant income gap between the financial elite and the poorest part of the population, and certain aspects of the environmental problem.

Materials and Methods. The study materials include statistical data on global issues contained in reports by various international organizations. The study used systemic analysis, comparative analysis, and interdisciplinary research.

Results. Attention is drawn to the long history of the formation of global problems. Statistical data is provided that characterizes the global challenges under consideration from a qualitative and quantitative perspective. It is noted that the complexity of solving global problems lies in their close relationship with each other. A brief overview of the views of foreign and Russian philosophers on the causes of the systemic crisis of human civilization is provided, and the connection of their ideas with both the Christian worldview in general and the position of the Russian Orthodox Church is shown. The article analyzes the Russian Orthodox Church’s view on the need to create a moral foundation for solving global issues of our time.

Discussion and Conclusion. Attention is drawn to one of the most important functions of religious organizations, the full-scale implementation of which can make a significant contribution to the development of methods for understanding and solving global problems, namely, the ethical assessment of any area of human activity and the consequences of that activity, as well as the deconstruction of the cult of material values and neo-pagan manifestations that have led to the creation of a cult of bodily pleasures in modern Western civilization.
