V. N. Tatishchev and the National Economy of Russia (on the 340th Anniversary of His birth)

 

Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of this study is to systematically analyze and evaluate V. N. Tatishchev’s scientific contribution to the development of concepts regarding the Russian national economy, its significance in the history of Russian science, and its relevance in contemporary conditions.

Materials and Methods. The methodological basis of the study consists of general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, analogy, abstraction) and specialized methods (historical-genetic, historical-comparative, retrospective, and systemic). The object of the study is the scientific works of V. N. Tatishchev. The subject of the study is the scholar’s ideas about the Russian national economy and their significance for the development of Russian humanities.

Results. The study analyzes the theoretical contribution of V. N. Tatishchev to the formation of scientific concepts about the national economy of Russia, his views on the development and management of large-scale (factory and manufacturing) production, the organization of money circulation, the role of trade in the formation of national wealth, and the solution of the “peasant question”. The practice-oriented nature of many of the scientist’s ideas aimed at improving state policy, its economic legislative and regulatory framework is revealed.

Discussions and Conclusion. Taking into account the evaluative judgments existing in Russian historiography about the nature and significance of V. N. Tatishchev’s ideas, the article explores specific controversial issues in its analysis of his scholarly legacy, such as his attitude toward serfdom, the balance between conservatism and liberalism in his views, the specific interpretations of specific issues in the organization of trade and monetary management, and others.
