The Relationship Between Personality Traits and Attitudes Toward the Internet Among University Students
Abstract
Introduction. The article examines the problem of the relationship between personality traits and attitudes toward the Internet among students. Theoretical approaches to the problem of attitudes toward the Internet and the factors influencing them are analyzed.
Materials and Methods. The empirical study was conducted at the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “Ogarev Mordovia State University”, with 110 students participating. The following methods were used: self-attitude test questionnaire by V. V. Stolin, S. R. Pantileev, “Motivation for a person to be on social networks” questionnaire by L. V. Trubitsyna, E. A. Feoktistova, attitudes toward the Internet questionnaire by E. Gubenko, self-presentation questionnaire on a social network (adaptation of the Self-Presentation method, SPFBQ) by D. S. Kornienko, N. A. Rudnova. Mathematical processing of the obtained results was carried out using Pearson correlation analysis.
Results. As a result of the study, correlation relationships were revealed between such personal qualities of students as self-attitude and self-image and attitudes towards problematic use of the Internet, motives for avoiding troubles, as well as personal and everyday motives for being on the Internet.
Discussion and Conclusion. The structure of self-attitude plays important role in the attitude towards the Internet environment. The more holistic and stable the idea of oneself is, the more constructive and purposeful are the motives for being on the Internet. Students with pronounced attitudes towards problematic use of the Internet tend to seek confirmation of their value, actualization of their own “I” or the desire to overcome the feeling of inferiority in the virtual environment.
Keywords: students, self-attitude, self-presentation, attitudes, Internet environment, social networks, motives for being on the Internet.
